Tuesday - January 15, 2008 - RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -
On his next to last day of his Middle East tour, President Bush said Tuesday he
hopes that as OPEC sets production levels, the oil cartel will consider the negative
effect high oil prices are having on the U.S. economy. Bush said he spoke with
Saudi King Abdullah about oil prices, which recently surged past $100 a barrel.

World
at Law: Friday -
January 11, 2008 - CAPE TOWN, South Africa - South
Africa's national police commissioner, Jackie
Selebi, is facing corruption charges, prosecutors said Friday. The National
Prosecuting Authority said the charges related to Selebi's "generally corrupt
relationship" with Glen Agliotti, a convicted drug trafficker. Selebi has
consistently protested his innocence. Selebi also holds the largely ceremonial
post of Interpol president, and tried to block the move in Pretoria's High Court
but the judge dismissed the application. On Tuesday, armed police arrested Johannesburg's
top prosecutor Gerrie Nel, who led the probe into Selebi, and hauled him away
in handcuffs. Nel is due in court Monday on charges of defeating the ends of justice.
The cases have raised tensions between the country's two top law enforcement agencies,
which are spending more time fighting each other, than conducting normal business.

Selebi was a representative of the World Federation of Democratic
Youth in Budapest, Hungary from 1983 - 1987. Thereafter he was elected Head of
the ANC Youth League and member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC
in 1987. In 1991 he was responsible for the repatriation of ANC exiles and in
1993 was appointed Head of the Department of Welfare of the ANC. Selebi was elected
Honourable Member of Parliament during the 1994 elections. In 1995, Selebi was
appointed South Africa's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United
Nations, Geneva. Switzerland.[1] In 1998 he got a Human Rights Award from the
International Service for Human Rights.

Case-Notes:
In ARAVE,
WARDEN v. HOFFMAN, MAXWELL the
Supreme Court entered a per curiam order in favor of Respondent Maxwell Hoffman.
He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. See State v. Hoffman,
123 Idaho 638, 851 P. 2d 934 (1993). Hoffman sought federal habeas relief on the
grounds that, inter alia, his counsel had been ineffective during both pretrial
plea bargaining and the sentencing phase of his trial.
After abandoning his claim that his counsel was ineffective during plea bargaining
the State agreed to withdraw its petition to the Supreme Court, so that he may
proceed with the resentencing ordered by the District Court.

House at Law: Presidential
Election 2008 FULL
COVERAGE
Tuesday - January 15, 2008 - DETROIT, Michigan
- As the Republican candidates made their final pitches, Tuesday's primary is
open and since the state Democratic Party was stripped of all their delegates
by the Democratic National Party, Democrats and many independents may decide to
weigh in on the GOP primary, all to McCain's advantage. The state is designated
60 delegates to the Republican National Convention in September, but the national
party also penalized Michigan Republicans half that number when the state legislature
violated party rules and changed the primary date to January 15, 2008.

law - law - n.: Today
the word law has various meanings or senses. Often law refers
to a set of rules and principles of conduct, action or procedure established
and formally recognized as binding by custom, agreement, or enforced by a controlling
authority; a system of law and order; administration of justice giving effect
to the laws of a community, a legal system, such as by judicial or legislative
decision, enforced by a political authority; courts, judges, codes, cases, law
suits, legal action or proceedings; litigation. The condition of social order
and justice created by adherence to such a system: a breakdown of law and civilized
behavior. [The Middle English word law, evolved from the Old English
lagu, which derived from the Old Norse lagu, variant of lag,
meaning that which is laid down.] Often also refers to agents or agencies involved
in or responsible for enforcing the law. Or, the science or study of law; Jurisprudence;
the knowledge, nature, use, and effects of laws and legal systems within society
(the politics of law). Includes the profession of a lawyer or an attorney; the
legal profession (the practice of law); and law enforcement officer, police.
Occasionally, an impromptu or extralegal system of justice substituted for established
judicial procedure: frontier law or taking the law into (one's)
own hands - handing out justice as one sees fit. More on
Law.
encyclopedia - en-cy-clo-pe-di-a - n.:
A comprehensive reference work or compendium of knowledge, containing
articles either on a wide range of general subjects (attempting to cover
all fields) or on numerous aspects of a particular specialized field
(aiming to be very comprehensive in a particular field). Print editions
of encyclopedias (typically a large set of books) have usually been
arranged alphabetically. The Medieval Latin word encyclopaedia,
meaning general education course, derived and evolved from the alteration
of Greek enkuklios paideia, meaning general education: enkuklios,
circular, general, cyclical, periodic, ordinary; + paideia,
education (from pais, paid-, child). Early copyists of Latin
manuscripts took this phrase to be a single Greek word, enkuklopaedia,
with the same meaning. The Greek words then became the New Latin word
encyclopaedia, later coming into general English use with the
meaning and sense of a "general course of instruction".] The
modern type of encyclopedia (with an alphabetical arrangement and bibliographies)
is known to have been established by John Harris with his Lexicon
technicum (1704). Perhaps the most famous print encyclopedia, the
Encyclopaedia Britannica was first published in three volumes
(1768 through 1771). Originally published in Edinburgh by Adam and Charles
Black, in later years, the Encyclopaedia Britannica grew in
size and reputation and was published in the United States when the
trademark and publication rights were sold (after the 11th edition)
to Sears Roebuck. More on Encyclopedia.
